Blind Target is a four-volume manga that takes place between the series and Endless Waltz. Below is a basic plotline for this manga.
Volume One
The start of Blind Target finds Heero Yuy doing a data purge on a computer as he shuts the Wing Zero down. He tells his Gundam that the new era has no use for a mobile suit, and requests that his friend rest in peace.
Meanwhile, Vice Minister Relena Dorlian is sitting at her desk wistfully looking at her teddy bear and the Happy Birthday note Heero gave her. Someone knocks on her door, and she asks them to enter. The guest is a woman named Chris, Relena's escort while she attends a press conference on a colony. The two head off for the conference together, where Relena is bombarded with questions and news reporters.
Sitting in the Winner residence and watching the conference on TV are Duo and Quatre. Duo mentions that "The Princess" has a tough job, and Quatre agrees that Relena's always on the go. Duo jokes that Quatre's the same way because he's on the colony for the same conference. Quatre explains that representives have come to discuss the unification process between the Earth and the Colonies. When Quatre asks why Duo isn't at work, Duo merely replies that he's just a delivery man and the packages can arrive a little late. Then they muse over the fact that all the pilots have lost touch with each other and they wonder how Heero, Wufei and Trowa are doing. Duo figures they've all landed on their feet.
On Wufei's colony, the fifth pilot isn't into his martial arts, and the leaders agree he needs the rest the peaceful fields bring. Out in the field, Wufei goes through a few moves and then demands his enemy show themselves. A few men step into the picture and Wufei snaps that they're up to no good. The men order him to come with them, but Wufei beats them all.
At the circus, Catherine asks Trowa to handle the rest of the lions feeding, and Trowa agrees. But as he starts his task, a young man shows up and speaks to Trowa. Surprised, Trowa recognizes the man as Ralph Kurt. Ralph is touched Trowa remembers his name and then replies that Trowa has a lot of nerve keeping the name "Trowa Barton". Trowa's not in the mood for small talk and demands to know what Ralph wants. Ralph still muses that the best soldier of them all is hiding in a circus, and Trowa replies that the new era doesn't need soldiers. Ralph states that it does, but won't say much more.
Back on the colonies, Duo jogs into his shuttle to answer a communication call. Turns out the call is from Heero, who's not in a mood to chat either. He demands to know if Quatre's on the same colony Duo is, and Duo replies that he just left Quatre. Heero tells him someone's after Quatre, and Duo races off to the conference. Meanwhile, Quatre dwadles despite his assistents pleas that he hurry or they'll be late to the meeting, and Quatre quietly says he thought someone called his name.
Duo races through the streets to catch up with Quatre, and security gaurds stop him despite his protests. But even as he breaks through, the conference building explodes. Duo tries to push through the panicking crowds, screaming Quatre's name.
The blast makes it to the news, where reporters announce it was caused by explosives and no one survived. Two men are talking - one is in charge, and the other is working for him. The leader asks if everyone was killed, including Quatre Winner. The employee replies that Quatre did not survive, and the leader mutters that everything is riding on their "plan". The next stage of their plan is to get the Gundams.
Back at the circus, Ralph is still remembering how Trowa used to always survive missions. Trowa's still not impressed, and Ralph says Trowa was always fearless. Finally Trowa speaks and states that he was not fearless, but empty, and no he's a human being and not just a soldier. Ralph then asks if Trowa will give him the Heavyarms, since Trowa doesn't need it anymore. Before Trowa can respond, Catherine runs out to tell him of the explosion at the conference meeting. Ralph mutters something about word traveling fast on the colonies, and Trowa demands to know if Ralph had something to do with the explosion. Ralph walks away and asks Trowa to think about the offer. Catherine figures out that Trowa's going away again, and as usual, he leaves her behind with the promise that he'll return.
Inside a dark building, Duo knocks on a door and enters a quiet room. He asks how the "dead man's" doing, and Quatre asks him not to joke. He wants to know how things are going outside. Duo tells him that Quatre's the most news-worthy victim of the explosion, and the entire conference hall burned up with no survivors. Then he smiles and asks how Quatre escaped. Quatre sadly tells him they had car trouble and were late. Duo kids that Quatre always had "the devil's luck, even as a Gundam pilot".
Quatre's still not very amused, and wonders who could have done such a thing, and if they're after Quatre for his position. But Duo tells him it has something to do with the Gundams, because there were men sniffing around his shuttle too. He tells Quatre they can ask "him" when they see "him", and Quatre asks who Duo means. Duo merely says he's going to meet with an unusual visitor.
Back in the field, Wufei's still beating men up, and they tell him they want the Gundam. Wufei rolls his eyes and tells them they can't have Nataku unless they defeat him first, which isn't likely. Apparently he's chatted with Heero to, because he mutters that "his" predictions are coming true.
In the colony, Relena and Chris are traveling to the nearest shuttle port. Relena is distraught that the conference was destroyed and says she should have been there. Chris replies that it's a good thing she wasn't, because the Earth's Sphere Unified Nation can't work without her. At that point, men attack Relena's limo, and the driver wrecks. Chris is minorly wounded, and Relena gets out and demends to know what's going on. The men tell her to come with them. But before Relena can react, Heero shows up and kills a few of them. He grabs Relena and Chris and they run. When Chris asks who Heero is, Relena merely says he's someone they can trust and they'll be safe at his side. Heero tells them they're leaving the colony so "they" won't find Relena. Relena asks why they're after her, but Heero tells her it's not just her - they're after him as well.
Volume Two
Volume two starts with Wufei, who tells Nataku he can't ask for her help yet. Then the manga skips to Trowa, who's walking down the street and being followed by bad guys, including Ralph. Ralph warns the men not to attack carelessly like the group who attacked Wufei did. Ralph is certain Trowa will lead them to the Heavyarms. As Trowa makes note of the fact that someone's tailing him and wonders what he should do, Duo appears and agrees to help out. The two of them take out the hitmen together and then run off. Ralph reports that his plan was a failure.
Duo and Trowa show up in a shuttle where Quatre's waiting. Trowa's shocked to find Quatre alive, and Duo merely laughs that it's not so easy to kill a Gundam pilot. Quatre agrees that he can't die yet, because he has things he needs to do first. Duo cuts off the reunion and tells them they need to get to Heero, because this involves all the Gundam pilots.
Meanwhile, Heero and Relena are in the cockpit of a shuttle together while Chris rests in her quarters. Heero tells Relena she needs to sleep as well, but Relena insists she'll be fine. Then she murmurs that she's not dreaming and he's really beside her, but before he can respond she admits she's selfish and wishes he could always be beside her. Heero simply tells her she must be tired because so many dreams are riding on her shoulders, yet he knows she can do it and keep the world at peace. Relena muses that anything can cause violence, even love, and asks what the people after them want. Heero doesn't quite answer, but tells her that whoever they are, he'll protect her from them while he runs his fingers into her hair and brushes her cheek. Relena merely leans her head against his shoulder.
While this is going on, Chris contacts her superiors and alerts them to the fact that Relena is on the shuttle and she'll contact them again when they reach their destination. Heero picks up her transmission. Ralph Kurt is also reporting in, to say that Trowa escaped and that Relena is under surveilance. The pawn leader of the bad guys mutters that the Gundam pilots are always in the way.
Back on the shuttle, Heero wakes Relena, who's sleeping against him. She asks where they are and he tells her they're near the L3 Colony cluster, at an uninhabitable colony that still has sections suitable for life support. It's the perfect hiding place. Chris walks in the room and recongizes the colony in a flashback, where the Alliance attacked and she managed to escape. Relena asks if she's alright, and Chris says she's fine. Inside the colony, Heero tells them another shuttle is approaching, and Chris replies that the colony is too far from transport routes. But Heero assures them it's fine, and Duo, Trowa and Quatre arrive.
There's a small flashback to how Heero was approached. The men told him they'd buy the Gundam from him, but Heero denied having anything to do with it. Heero tells Duo, Trowa and Quatre that the men said there was going to be a new war. Duo mutters that they do want the Gundams in that case, and it's not for peace. Everyone asks Heero who these people are, and Heero tells them that the group after them was once part of White Fang. Relena is shocked and has a flash of Zechs in her mind.
Meanwhile, Chris is ripping out communication lines, and Ralph has found the colony and recongized it as well. Quatre and Trowa are working together to seal off parts of the colony, and Trowa asks if Quatre's thinking about what happened. Naturally, kind-hearted Quatre is. Quatre is sure the others in the conference lost their lives because of him, and Trowa tells him that he must bring everyone back together because that's his purpose. Then Trowa contacts Duo and demands to know what he's doing.
Duo's fighting the radar, which is destroyed, and rants that the White Fang guys will be around any minute and he doesn't have any way to track them. A voice behind him sarcastically states that he noticed, since he got in without Duo seeing him. Duo merely greets Wufei with cheerfulness and asks for his help.
Heero is busy locking Relena in a safe little place where no one can find her. When Relena asks if Chris can be with her, he tells her not to worry about Chris and locks her in. As Heero expected, Chris is contact Ralph to say she destroyed the radar and no one knows Ralph is there. Neither Ralph nor Chris expected to come to this particular colony. Chris tells him she'll find the Gundam.
Ralph and his group start searching as well, but they decide it's too quiet and try to return to their shuttle. Trowa stops Ralph and demands to know what's going on and what he wants with the Gundams. Quatre shows up and asks Ralph if he was responsible for the bombing. Ralph admits they tried to kill Quatre because his family were traitors and were going to sell the colonies to Earth. Quatre gets angry and yells that Ralph should have attacked just him and not killed innocent people, because that wasn't justice. Trowa stops Quatre's little yelling match, and drags Ralph off.
Chris has found a hanger and believes Wing Zero is in it. Heero appears and tells her the door won't open without the right code. She tells him she was lost and was trying to get back to Miss Relena. Heero tells her she won't get near Relena, and then asks if she wants to see inside the hanger. He punches in the code and orders her to take a good look. Chris is shocked at what she sees inside.
Volume Three
Duo and Wufei are sneaking around looking for bad guys, and Duo mentions that he had no idea Heero contacted Wufei. Wufei responds that it concerned Nataku so he couldn't ignore it, but he didn't expect to end up with the other pilots either. Duo says he wishes the reunion weren't like this himself, and that they shouldn't be needed. Wufei isn't sure about that, and argues that the situation is as disturbing as ever. Duo says he'd like to believe in peace. Wufei is surprised Duo can believe something like that even with White Fang running around, but Duo replies that they aren't a normal splitter group. He and Wufei dash out to take care of a few of them.
Back in the hanger, Chris is still shocked that not a single Gundam is on the colony. Heero tells her he once used the colony to hide Wing Zero, but it's now a decoy like many others. He tells her no one can have the Gundams, and she asks if he knew all along about her involvement. He replies that her communications are sloppy. Chris demands Heero kill her, but he refuses and tells her that Relena needs her secretary. Chris argues that she won't tell him information, and he merely shrugs and says they don't need her for that and the war ended a long time ago, so there is no reason to kill her.
Meanwhile, reporters are blaming the colonies for Relena's absence, and Duo says they need to work fast to avoid a huge problem. Heero and Chris enter the communications room and Duo asks if Chris was in on it too. Chris ignores him and runs to Ralph, who's tied in a chair. They ask what the pilots plan to do with them. Duo responds that the Gundam pilots aren't barbaric, and they'll let Chris and Ralph go when they're done. Ralph asks what Duo is doing, and Duo replies he's breaking into Ralph's shuttle transmission. Ralph doesn't expect Duo to break in, but naturally, Duo does.
Trowa explains they're searching for the real power behind the White Fang, because they can't be that noble. Chris argues that everyone was fighting for the Colonies, and Heero says that if this was true, they wouldn't want the Gundams. Chris almost lets out some secrets, but Ralph stops her, and Heero snaps that killing Relena isn't the right thing to do. Trowa decides it's time to tell Ralph and Chris the truth.
Quatre is walking through the colony alone, and he finds Wufei. Curious as to what the 5th pilot is up to, Quatre inquires and Wufei tells him he's just thinking. Quatre realizes they're on an observation deck, and comments that it's strange the world of the stars is void of life, yet it feels like home. Wufei tells him it is home. Quatre asks why people hate, and Wufei responds that people are weak. Quatre sadly says he's weak because he hates the White Fang, and Wufei yells that he can't say such things because he was choosen by the Gundam. He tells Quatre to be strong, because strength is righteousness.
Back in the communications room, Relena has managed to break out of her cell and join the others. Duo invites her in and tells her to sit down. Relena asks Heero if she can talk to Chris, and then she tells Chris she doesn't hate her despite the facts. Ralph breaks in and yells at Relena for being a hypocrite because she wants peace at the colonies' expense. Relena argues that she's trying to learn about the colonies and their daily struggles so she can mediate an understanding. At this point, Duo gets information in.
A man named Sogran is in command of White Fang, and Trowa remembers him as one of White Fang's members in the war. He went missing after the Libra crashed. Heero finds that Sogran is being funded by a company on Earth that was once connected to Romefeller, and developed mobile suits. With the Gundams, they could recreate a line of new weapons and start another war. Ralph and Chris object that this can't be possible.
Meanwhile, Sogran is talking to his leader. They expect Earth and the Colonies to fall into unrest with Relena's absence and take advantage of the situation by starting a war. Sogran doesn't seem to believe in his leader's ideals, but he orders his men to attack the Gundam pilots just the same.
At the colony, Trowa visits Ralph in his cell. Ralph mutters that he was just a pawn and fought for nothing. Trowa murmurs that he envied Ralph because in the war, Ralph had a family and loved ones to protect while Trowa had nothing. Ralph argues that nothingness gave Trowa the perfect mindset for being a soldier. Trowa replies that he was the perfect fighting machine but it was still an empty way to live. With that, he tells Ralph to protect those he loves - namely, Chris.
Heero calls Quatre into the security deck, and Quatre asks what Heero wants. Heero explains that Quatre needs to listen to a talk. He keys in to Relena and Chris's discussion, where Chris asks Relena if peace can truly be achieved. Relena insists it can. Chris admits she lived on the colony they're at, as did Ralph, but the Alliance attacked and killed her parents. Ralph saved her, and all Chris's anger, grief and nightmares rolled into blame against Earth. Relena agrees that this was all Chris could blame, but now isn't the time to hate and blame. Relena explains she needs Chris's memories and trust to help the Colonies and Earth unite for peace.
Quatre quietly says that Relena is so strong, and Heero replies that Relena is the strongest. Quatre says he lost sight of the courage and strength it takes to love and forgive someone. At that moment, the White Fang mobile suit squad arrives, and Duo rants that they don't have any Gundams. Relena asks what Heero will do, and he tells her he's going to blow up the colony. When the colony explodes, it takes out the White Fang suits.
Sogran contacts his leader on Earth and explains what happened. The man rants that he's given Sogran billions and hasn't gotten a Gundam in return. A conference is about to start soon, and the leader plans to go to keep the unrest up. The man orders the colonies to prove they didn't take Relena, and they can't. The leader argues this is a cover-up and the Earth knows the Colonies stole Relena to keep peace from occuring. Before the colonies can object, Relena walks in the door and apologizes for making everyone worry.
She explains what's been going on, and the man starts to leave. Quatre stops him. Meanwhile, Wufei and Duo head for the moon to destroy a mobile suit manufacturing base. Duo agrees they should put a stop to the cheap Gundam knockoffs, and makes a crack about his and Wufei's luck on the moon. Wufei snaps that this time, Duo might remember being silent will save lives. While they're doing that, Trowa, Heero and Ralph confront Sogran. Heero stops Sogran from killing Ralph, and Sogran asks if the Gundam pilots will help him take control. He boasts that he can achieve unification under his own rule. Heero tells him their conversation was just broadcast across the base and naive rebels may have a problem with his secret plans.
Relena and Chris part ways, and Relena insists they'll meet again.
Volume Four
The Gundam pilots all meet up and agree to vanish after the explosion on the manufacturing plant. Quatre agrees to get Relena to the next conference. Duo, Wufei and Trowa hurry off, and Quatre goes to wait in the shuttle. Relena and Heero are left alone.
Heero tells Relena to hurry, since there is no time, and Relena agrees but asks him to be careful. Heero asks her not to worry about him and to focus on her mission for peace. Relena merely smiles and tells him he's a strong person, but she'll always worry about him because she wants to. With that, she turns to leave, but Heero grabs her hand. He never says what he wants, but he kisses her goodbye.
Meanwhile, Duo's ready to cause destruction, but before he can destroy the base Wufei mutters that evil will always show up and ruin things. Duo complains that Wufei is way too pessimistic and tells him to have a little hope. He adds that humans aren't stupid and they know the pain of the past, which will make them stronger and kinder for the future. Wufei doesn't buy it, and Duo just groans and blows up the base.
At the conference, Quatre calms people down and then tells Relena the chaos is settling. Relena tells Chris that she's sure Ralph is fine. Quatre says the road to peace will be hard, but they must keep trying. Back at the circus, Ralph says goodbye to Trowa, and Trowa invites him over for coffee or something. Ralph doesn't want to intrude, so he warns Trowa to watch out for the Barton Foundation. Catherine comes up as Ralph leaves and asks if Trowa is hurt, but Trowa tells her that doesn't matter because he's back.
Duo goes to visit Quatre, and comments that Quatre has a hard job. Quatre says it's not so bad, and things are starting to run more smoothly. He adds that he's been thinking about the Gundams - he calls them unique entities they trusted with their lives - and Duo agrees the Gundams are their partners. Quatre sadly tells him that if they want to move towards peace, the Gundams will be obsolete. Duo freaks, and Quatre calmly tells him they need to make a decision about the Gundams before something else happens like this incident.
Duo finally agrees it's for the best, even if it will be hard. Then he tells Quatre not to look so sad because this proves real peace is coming.
Wufei is sitting in an empty room back in his colony when a messanger arrives. The messanger tells him he comes to speak to Wufei in confidence because Wufei is a Gundam pilot, and he's there on behalf of someone Wufei knew well. Wufei agrees to listen to his request.
Heero goes back to school, and Duo looks up him. Heero actually catches Duo first, and puts a gun to Duo's back, but Duo merely laughs and says Heero's as dangerous as ever. Heero demands to know why Duo's there. Duo tells him he's delivering some mail, and whips out a floppy disk. At the circus, Quatre goes to watch Trowa's act and afterwards, he tells Trowa he's there about the Gundams. They agree something needs to be done so no one can get them. Trowa tells Quatre that Heavyarms wasn't his to start with, so Quatre can do what he pleases with it. Back in a library, Heero reads his mail while Duo looks over his shoulder. Duo explains Heero needs to send Wing Zero, and Heero agrees. Duo was expecting resistance, but Heero tells him Quatre will do the job well and there won't be traces. Duo mutters something about Heero being unemotional.
Duo also asks Heero to get in touch with Wufei, but Heero tells him he has no clue where Wufei is, and he contacted him before only through the Gundams' circuitry. Duo wonders if Wufei will even agree to destroying the Gundams, and Heero says that's Wufei's decision. As they walk back outside, they see Relena on a large screen newscast. Duo's happy to see she's doing fine. Heero just sort of smiles, and later Relena hugs her teddy bear again.
The story ends leading up to Endless Waltz, as Wufei asks for Nataku's guidence and hopes that Mariamaia and her Army will lead him to his answers and the right path. As he contemplates this, Quatre sits inside Sandrock for what he expects to be the last time, remembering the past and his connection to the Gundam. Trowa does the same in Heavyarms, and Duo sits with Deathscythe smiling. Heero thinks about Wing Zero. The story continues in Endless Waltz.
