Zechs is a man of many masks, and he constantly changes. You never really know where he's going or where he'll end up. He starts the series as OZ's top fighter pilot and soldier, and his arrogance and confidence aren't just talk - he's the best at mobile suit piloting, rivaled only by Heero Yuy and the other Gundam pilots. However, the name "Zechs Merquise" and the silver mask that accompanies the name are merely that - masks to hide the real identity. Zechs was born Prince Milliardo Peacecraft, heir to the Sanc Kingdom throne. When his kingdom was destroyed and his parents assassinated, Zechs vowed revenge and gave up his birthrite, knowing his pacifist father would never approve of his only son and oldest child fighting a war and murdering people. When Zechs' mask finally shatters in battle, he reverts back to his birthname of Milliardo and becomes a peace ambassador to the colonies. But he soon realizes that war is inevitable, and the world doesn't need another peace ambassador...it needs a damn good fighter. Donning another silver mask, Zechs turns back into the mobile suit flying ace and joins the Gundam pilots for a bit...then changes his mind and becomes leader of White Fang. He hopes to end the war by uniting everyone - both colonists and Earth - against him alone, by becoming a single dreaded enemy.
Zechs returns in Endless Waltz as Preventer Wind, and amazingly enough he fights an entire battle alongside Noin without killing a single enemy soldier.
