Episode Zero Manga Guide - Quatre

Because of the conditions in space, natural births were impossible to achieve and artificial births (test tube babies) were the main means of reproduction. However, the Winner Family, who had been in space from the beginning of the projects, still suffered from being unable to produce naturally even after natural births became easier in AC 100.

However, Catherine Winner was determined to bear her husband's only son naturally, despite the fact that it cost her life. Mr. Winner believed his wife to be the strongest and most noble person in space for this act. But he did not tell his son, Quatre, that he had been born naturally. Instead, he wished Quatre to feel equal to his twenty-nine sisters (whom had been born in test tubes), and he told Quatre that he had been born the same.

In AC 193, Quatre Winner was on his way to Earth - a planet he considered boring. Yet he still felt that a boring planet was better than a test tube baby. Unfortunately, before his shuttle could reach Earth, space hi-jackers called the Maguanac Corps overtook the flight and informed them they would be taking the shuttle to the space satellite MO-III. Quatre's assistents asked for his guidence, but Quatre shrugged this problem off and went to sleep, requesting he be woken when they arrived. The assistences angrily muttered that his lack of care came from being a test tube baby like all the Winners.

On MO-III, the Maguanac Corps held everyone on the shuttle hostage, and Quatre told them his name and demanded to know what they wanted. The leader refused to give his name in return, and said they would be hostages until the Maguanac's could escape from the Alliance. Quatre bitterly tells them that he's not worth anything as a hostage, because he loves no one and no one loves him, and they can always make a number of replacements even if he's killed.

The leader contacted Mr. Winner, and requested that he take the Maguanac Corps to Earth to see their families. Mr. Winner agreed to these terms. He simply asked to speak to his son, and demanded to know why Quatre was even there. Quatre snapped back and asked if his father was surprised to see his "tool" working on his own. Mr. Winner was surprised his son was still talking this way, and Quatre yelled that he and his sisters were merely created to be puppets that Mr. Winner could control. He announced he could think for himself and act on his own, and was going to "run away" with the Maguanac Corps to Earth.

At this point, the leader snatched Quatre around and slapped him across the face. Surprised, Quatre angrily demanded to know what the assault was for. The leader orders Quatre to have some pride in himself, and explains that he too was born in a test tube.

Back at the Winner residence, Iria confronts her father about the fact that Quatre was never told the truth of his birth, but they say Quatre would have been worse had he known. Mr. Winner replies that there is still no reason for his behavior and he's really a gentle person like Iria is.

On MO-III, Quatre is talking with his Gundam scientist, who declares the Maguanac Corp is fighting for pride and they intend to help the unfortunate. The way of the Maguanac is pride for life, and once you have life, you must live it proudly. The reason they call themselves "Maguanac" is because the word means "family", and all 40 members were test tube babies. The scientist says they're kinder and purer than anyone, just like Quatre is. Then he leaves, and says he's going to hide out at the Winner residence, and for Quatre not to forget him.

As Quatre stands alone waiting for orders, he overhears a stray Maguanac betraying the others by telling the Alliance their coordinates. The Alliance announces that the hostages are of no use and they will attack. Rasid, the Maguanac leader, orders all his soldiers into combat after deciding there's a traitor. At that moment, Quatre appears with the traitor wrapped in rope, and hands over the communicator the man had been using to contact the Alliance. The other Maguanac angrily confront him and declare he is no longer their family. Rasid thanks Quatre, and Quatre responds that he used to be just as that man was. Rasid says Quatre is improving.

However, the man breaks his bonds and grabs a gun, intent on shooting Rasid. Quatre tries to shove Rasid out of the way, but the bullet scrapes Quatre's arm and hits Rasid as well. Another Maguanac kills the traitor, and several men rush to Rasid's side and ask if Quatre is okay. Quatre tells them to look to Rasid, because he's more important.

The Maguanac decide they can take the Alliance suits out despite the fact that they are out-numbered. Quatre asks to go as well, feeling it was his fault the traitor busted loose from the bonds. The Maguanac tell him he wasn't at fault, but Quatre demands to prove that he can be useful and proud of himself. One member agrees to let Quatre join them, and he contacts Rasid for advice. Rasid replies that Quatre saved his life, so Quatre may use his suit and his goggles.

As they rush into battle, Quatre gives battle orders and the other Maguanac realize he's excellently skilled. After getting rid of the main problems, Quatre orders them all to go back and make it to Earth while he holds off the remaining twenty enemy suits. Rasid orders him back, and Quatre feels that the Maguanac still don't accept him as family. Rasid explains that they do feel he's part of them now, and he asks if Quatre will go to Earth with them. Quatre thinks about it, but he announces that if he goes to Earth, he won't go to run away, but to find himself. With that, he takes off to protect the Maguanac as they make it to Earth.

Rasid orders his men to return, and calls Quatre a gentlemen. He adds that the entire Maguanac Corp will refer to Quatre as "Master Quatre" from then on, since they owe their lives to him. The Maguanac readily agree.

Back at the Winner Estate, Mr. Winner recieves a phone call that Quatre fought until the end. He murmurs that his son is just like Catherine - the strongest and most noble. And Quatre decides that he can't die until he reaches the Earth.

Two years later, in AC 195, Quatre reunites with the Maguanac on Earth for Operation Meteor.
