In AC 190 there was a mercenary who had "no name". He had been a mercenary for as long as he could remember, and he had no past. He was one of the best at mobile suit fighting. On one of his missions, after his suit had been disabled, he got out and ran into a young girl who said her name was Midii Une.
In No Name's group, certain men wanted to quit the rebel forces and join the Alliance, but their captain says that the rebels must keep the fighting going. Meanwhile, No Name is repairing his mobile suit, while Midii Une plays on a handheld computer. No Name tells her they could use her help in the kitchen, and she asks why he saved her. He tells her they're just alike. She asks what he means, and he doesn't reply.
There's a small flashback to circus wagon racing away from fighting mobile suits. Inside, a husband and wife are holding their small daughter and son. During a blast, the daughter and son are separated and fly out of the wagon just as the mobile suits destroy it and kill their parents. The boy remembers looking at the stars and thinking that outer space must be better than what he has. Then the rebel captain finds him and decides to take him into feed him. The boy is too young to know his name, so the captain calls him "No Name".
Midii gives No Name a cross-necklace for his help, and says that God will watch over him. As he looks at it, the rebels announce that they're departing. Then Midii tells No Name that she really doesn't like him. As they drive with the rebel captain out, he finds both of them looking at a circus and Midii asks No Name if he misses the circus. He replies that he doesn't, and he's never been to one because he's been a soldier since the day he was born. However, as they pass the circus, a young girl named Catherine yells at the rebels to leave because she hates war. Her parents and little brother were killed in an air raid nine years earlier.
On the battlefield again, the rebel captain expects to surprise Alliance forces, but the Alliance is already prepared for the battle. The rebels leave, but the Captain remains and is battered by Alliance forces. No Name requests they leave after he kills the runaway rebels. The Captain is shocked and tells No Name that those rebels made him who he was. But No Name insists they betrayed their captain and deserved to die. The Captain mutters that No Name can't possibly be human, and No Name agrees by saying he's just a soldier.
Back at the camp, Midii asks him to show some sadness for killing his own men, but No Name says he's used up all his sad faces as a baby and did what he had to. Midii tells him he's shutting down his heart and wears a tearless mask.
A massive sweep to destroy the rebel army begins and No Name saves Midii from the blasting. She says she won't thank him and he says he never expected her to. The rebels are killed, and No Name finds his dead captain. While he's standing over the man, he asks Midii how much the Alliance paid her to locate and lead them to the rebel forces. She calmly replies that she was paid enough to feed her little brothers and sick father. He figures out that her handheld game was a communications device and the Alliance had followed their every move, and Midii angrily replies that No Name is always their only survivor. He pulls off the cross necklace, and she tells him that was also a transmitter. No Name pulls out a gun and she murmurs that even he can get mad.
However, before No Name can shoot, Midii says they aren't alike at all, and he's much more fortunate than she is. Nothing ties him down - no name, no past, and no commrades. She says then that she loves him, because she has a name, a family and a job. She couldn't have lived unless she became a spy and killed people, and she wanted to be just like No Name. But she can't even tell No Name how she feels about him because she's not empty like he is, and that she's filled with things like her family, her job and guilt. She always wanted to be with him and that was why she hated empty people - because she couldn't be one.
No Name asks if she has anything more to say, and then tells her she's better off than he is because she does have a family to return to. With that, he turns to leave, and they say good bye. But Midii calls after him one last time, and he merely replies, "You've got the wrong guy. I'm not No Name. I'm a traveler looking for a place to go home to". With that, he heads off into outer space.
