Episode Zero Manga Guide - Wufei

Wufei's story starts in AC 194, on Colony AO206. According to the tradition of the Long Clan, children are wed at the age of 14. And so, Long Meilan was engaged to Chang Wufei. She prided herself as being the strongest of her clan, and thus, she called herself "Nataku" - a goddess of the warriors.

Meilan's pride for the warrior caused her to be displeased at her husband's scholarly approach to life. After he returned from boarding school, she announced that he had no right to succeed her family's clan. Angrily, Wufei rips off his noble clothes and tells her family to go to hell. He did not follow the warrior's path like the other members of his wife's family.

Later, Meilan finds her husband reading in a field, and she angrily confronts him. She says he has no right to call himself a man, and she had hoped being married to her might change his ways. When he doesn't respond, she asks why he doesn't practice martial arts like everyone else. Wufei asks why she fights at all. Meilan tells him she fights to uphold justice.

Wufei doesn't believe justice exists, so Meilan suggests she show off her skill. Wufei agrees, and quickly puts her on the ground. As Meilan struggles to stand, it starts to rain, and she mutters that this couldn't have happened because she's the strongest. Wufei snaps that she choose an arrogant name for herself, and that justice was created only for convience. He declares that a battle fought for that reason isn't right. Meilan stands, humilated, and yells that she has to fight because that is her way.

Back inside, Wufei confronts his scientest, who tells him he did not win against Meilan. He adds that Wufei has the skill to change the course of history, and Wufei argues that no single person can change history. The elder snaps that Wufei is smart, but smarts will not help the suffering and misery of the coming era. With that, Wufei looks at the Shenlong Gundam and a proto-type of the Tallgeese and asks if that's why they're being built - for the new era. His scientist suggests Wufei name the Gundam. Wufei tells him to name it "Shenlong", because "Nataku" is too weak to be their family gaurdian.

In a space transport ship, Major Sally Po is talking to General Septem. Septem has just ordered her to destroy the AO206 Colony, but Sally refuses to destroy the colony just because it's old, and she demands the inhabitants be spared. Septem refuses to listen and reannounces his orders before cutting communcation. Furious, Sally is sure such action can not have justification, but OZ troops are already moving in to take care of the colony. This was the first time the Alliance and OZ disagreed on how to handle a problem. Septem wanted to use a biological weapon, and OZ wanted to use their mobile suits. Determined to put the Alliance down, OZ moved first.

Meilan could not allow OZ to attack, so she gave up her status as a woman and announced she was Nataku. Taking the Tallgeese proto-type, she went out to battle. However, inside the colony, she realized the mobile suits were trampling the flowers in a field, and decided to fight in space instead. Wufei ordered her to stay, but Meilan told him to shut up so she could fight for justice.

Wufei, thinking his wife was stupid for upholding justice without power, runs to save her. In space, Meilan can't really handle the Tallgeese proto-type, and OZ attacks her again and again. Wufei takes the Shenlong, despite the fact that it doesn't have weapons, and says he won't stand by while his wife is killed. In space, Wufei realizes the Alliance has biological weapons and he loses his temper, destroying a main mobile suit.

Sally Po orders her men to lie to General Septem and announce the colony's inhabitants have been killed. Afterwards, she was relocated to a hospital in the JAP point on Earth.

In space, still battling OZ, Meilan mutters that she won't lose to them. Wufei saves her, and orders her to return to the Colony. She does as he asks, and he takes her mobile suit's weapon. An OZ soldier says he can't disgrace his leader Treize, and Wufei makes a note of Treize's name. Meilan's suit is destroyed, but Wufei saves her, and she murmurs that her name is Nataku. Wufei agrees that she's the strongest, and she requests he take her to his field that she saved earlier.

Wufei carries Nataku into the field, and they sit down together. She murmurs that she's never looked at flowers to see their beauty before, and then asks Wufei if she was strong and worthy to be his wife. He responds that she's the strongest person he knows, but Nataku replies that he's stronger than she is. With that, she leans against his shoulder, and he mutters for her not to get too friendly. However, Nataku does not respond. Frightened, Wufei shakes her and tells her to open her eyes and accept him as her husband, but she's already died.

On Earth, Lady Une reports to Treize that the colony was destroyed, but a Gundam was reported. She asks if they should report the Gundam to the Alliance, but Treize tells her it's the colonies' ways of rebellion and he must deal with it when it comes to Earth.

On the colony, Wufei buries Nataku, and the elder of the colony tells him he is no longer bound to follow his wife and may return to his studies. But Wufei refuses this, and says he will fight for justice instead. His scientists offers him the Shenlong, but Wufei tells him to call the Gundam "Nataku" because his wife protected the Gundam and her spirit resides in it. Lastly, he declares that he will change the world and asks Meilan to protect him.
